Jews being put into boxcars for transportation to camps
(theholocaustexplained.org) |
The Jews were transported to different camps or ghettos in small freight boxcars on a train. They were locked in the boxcars for days with almost nothing, in some cases, not even food or water. All the Jews could bring were the clothes on their backs.
“There were people in the boxcars so hungry they couldn’t control themselves. They would bite the flesh out from dead people, and eat the flesh of other people who were already dead.” –Latarus, Berek
Even in transportation, Jews had no rights and were forced to bear horrible situations, sometimes leading to their deaths or resorting to cannibalism.

“The next morning, we walked toward the station, where a convoy of cattle cars was waiting. The Hungarian police made us climb into the cars, eighty persons in each one. They handed us some bread, a few pails of water. They checked the bars on the windows to make sure they would not come loose. The cars were sealed. One person was placed in charge of every car: if someone managed to escape, that person would be shot.” –Elie Wiesel
