Nuremberg Trials
Nuremberg Trial
(Jewish Virtual Library) |
After WWII ended, most Nazi officers were put on trial for their war crimes from 1945-1946. The Nazis involved were held responsible for the acts they participated in during these times. Some Nazis fled Europe before they were committed to court.
"So grotesque and preposterous are the principle characters in this galaxy of clowns and crooks that none but a thrice double ass could have taken them."
–Officer in the Allied Control Commision |
Most of the Nazis who were put on trial willingly admitted to the crimes that they had committed. Officers who had key roles in the Holocaust received short prison sentences or no punishment at all. Individual officers who committed the killing of Jews were the ones who received the worst punishments.
